The 2024-25 pecan crop in Georgia is being harvested and growers are reporting slightly lower quality in some counties of Georgia that received extremely high winds earlier this season with the hurricanes that passed through the state.
Overall Georgia’s pecan crop looks to be of excellent quality, however multiple growers from various counties across Georgia are reporting lower than expected quality. Of course pecan orchards in the direct path of the weather events received the most damage with some orchards being nearly wiped out with the majority of the trees on the ground.
However, even outside of the direct path where high winds persisted for several hours grower are reporting lower quality, chalking it up to the sustained high winds that likely twisted the undeveloped pecan fruit cluster causing issues during the final stages of development of the pecans.
These issues are more common in orchards out west where high winds whip across the desert plains, but here in the southeast we typically don’t deal with these types of issues unless we see significant weather events, which seem to be happening more frequently over the last few years.
We will get a better picture of the overall damage in the area as we get closer to the end of harvest this season. Hopefully not too many orchards in the area were impacted.
