Many pecan growers began fungicide applications the week of April 12. For leaf-scab, university research and grower experience in recent years proves that Kphite 7LP can control leaf-scab used as a stand-alone, no other fungicide required.
Gary Veal, technical sales agronomist for Plant Food Systems, Inc., says that Kphite 7LP is classified as “Low Risk” for pecan scab building resistance. Many of our fungicide products are medium to high risk for pecan scab developing resistance. Those fungicides are rotated frequently and tank-mixed to offset the potential resistance factor.
In 2018, 2019, and 2020 growers who utilized Kphite 7LP in early applications noted outstanding leaf-scab control with some reporting a visual difference in their tree’s overall health.
For highly scab-sensitive varieties, Veal comments that Kphite 7LP may be used alone at the 2 quart per acre rate. Applications need to be repeated as with any fungicide and Veal advises to re-apply Kphite 7LP on a 14day interval, minimally, on highly scab sensitive varieties.
What is unique about Kphite 7LP chemistry? For the first time our pecan growers have an option to use several applications of fungicide without tank-mix or alternating chemistry. The Plant Food Systems, Inc. recommendation for early Kphite 7LP sprays begins at bud-break running to early June. According to Veal, the focus shifts in mid-June to nut-scab control. Kphite 7LP can be used alone now through early June, according to Veal.
