American Pecans to Set Global Standards

The American Pecan industry is global leader in pecan research, pecan farming and pecan processing. In recent years American pecan growers came together to form a national marketing order to further the industry in both research, marketing and product development while attempting to stabilize both the supply and demand, and create steady, reliable market growth.

One of the tasks set forth by the new pecan marketing order is to create standards for size, quality and packaging for the industry that will be enforceable across the industry. The American Pecan Council will be hosting a series of discussions in the near future to gather input from pecan growers across the US in order to to this to implement standards for US pecans as well as pecans imported from other countries, such as Mexico and South Africa, as well as Argentina. While being the largest exporter of pecans in the world the US is also one of the largest importers of pecans in the world, and now these standards will apply to all pecan nuts in the US.

With the eventual passage of these new standards the US will set standards for the rest of the world’s producers to follow if they expect to sell pecans to US.

The Texas Pecan Board will be hosting the APC in a meeting next Month on February 27th. Mr. Bob Whitney with the Texas Pecan board says “This informational meeting hosted by the Texas Pecan Board will provide pecan growers, buyers and processors a chance to learn about pecan standards and discuss how those standards will be implemented by APC. This has far reaching implications for all the pecan industry and anyone with an interest or investment in pecan production is welcome to attend.”

TheAPC is encouraging all pecan growers, buyers, processors and shippers to attend, and contribute to the creation theses pecan standards.
