Its June now, and for our brothers and sisters in South Africa and Australia, it means pecan harvest time, but for the growers here in the Southeastern USA this time of year means aphids. This is the time of year that we all start looking for the yellow aphids. Soon we will all be spraying various chemicals to stop the spread of the aphids, so I though, now was as good a time as any to touch on the topic of sprays and list the top three sprays for beating back that pesky yellow aphid.
Number 3. Belay by Vallent. Belay is a is a neonicotinoid, which is a class of insecticides that are similar nicotine, nicotine has been used in pesticides since the 1700’s. Belay came on strong in the pecan industry several years back with big promises against aphids, but has since left us wanting more. However it has still made the top 3 on our list today.
Number 2. Provado by Bayer. Provado is an Imidacloprid which also belongs to the neonicotinoid, however Provado is a systemic. Imidacloprids are the most widely used insecticide in the world.
Number 1. Closer by Dow. Closer is a sulfoxaflor which is classified for use against sap-feeding insects.
